SRB-Sociedad Rural Bariloche
The SRB-Bariloche Rural Society includes 100 farmers from the North-Eastern region of Patagonia, Argentina. At provincial level, SRB is a member of the Rio Negro Federation of Rural Societies, which in turn is associated to the CRA-Argentinian Rural Confederation.
The SRB was founded in 1943 with the intention of promoting the agricultural sector as a whole and the livestock activity in particular.
The SRB plays a central trade union role by generating brainstorming and a working environment that allows for improvements of the regional agricultural production and its farmers. Some of the main recent achievements include the organization of the Annual Rural Show in Bariloche after many years of discontinuation, the shift of the Foot and Mouth disease non-vaccination barrier to the North, the legal support of smallholders and farmers with precarious land tenure, the promotion and development of new markets for agricultural products, etc.
Currently, the SRB is promoting non-traditional activities such as forestry, pork production, agro tourism, ornamental plant production and equestrian events. This expansion and diversification of activities is largely the product of the concern for sustainability after the devastating natural disasters suffered by farmers in the region in recent years.
The Sociedad Rural Bariloche (SRB) is a full partner of the EDULIVE project. In its function as farmer association, it offers experience in collaboration between small producers and other livestock sector stakeholders. SRB is an entry point for the EDULIVE project’s direct involvement of small producers in Argentina. SRB is not leading a WP, but is involved in many. In WP1, SRB represents the needs and demands of farmers. It supports the consultation process and links the consortium to small producers in order to integrate their opinions on the needs for university curricula in Animal Sciences. In WP2, SRB will be supporting the establishment of cooperation mechanisms in their role as farmers association. In WP5 and WP7, SRB collaborates with Argentinian universities in higher education as internship host, expert lecturers and by offering field visit opportunities. In WP6 and WP8, SRB is part of the evaluation of new mechanisms and activities implemented by the EDULIVE project.
