UNALM-Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina
Aims and activities of the organisation

The UNALM is a public university located in Lima, Peru. Its motto is “I want to work on the man and on the land”. The university was founded in the early twentieth century, but was officially recognised as a university only in 1960. The university is organised into eight faculties which contain 24 academic departments. The university offers 12 degrees at undergraduate level and in the last few years has increased the academic options for postgraduate studies, currently offering 25 MSc and seven PhD programmes. In 2010, UNALM had around 4900 undergraduate students and approx. 970 at postgraduate level. The university staff is comprised of 412 permanent professors and other academic staff as well as almost 100 official employees. UNALM offers careers such us agronomy, animal science, agricultural engineering, biology, environmental engineering, forestry, food science, fishery, agricultural economics, management, meteorology and statistics. To support the academic and scientific work developed in the university, UNALM has a network of research centres (such as the Institute of Agro-industrial Development, the Institute of Biotechnology and the ISRL-Institute for the Sustainable Rural Livelihoods), as well as 3 regional development centres in the main regions of the country (Highland, Coast and Amazonia). Also, the UIE-Office of Educational Innovation was created to improve professors’ skills. The Animal Science College is one of the oldest ones of UNALM, founded in 1961. It is organized in two academic departments: nutrition and animal production, and research and development (R&D) programs on dairy cattle, alpacas, sheep, pigs, poultry, meat, animal food, and animal breeding are implemented.

The role of the organisation in the project

UNALM is a full partner and target organisation of the EDULIVE project. UNALM leads WP2, which establishes cooperation mechanisms between the universities in Argentina and Peru and the private livestock sector. UNALM is leading WP5 to implement the cooperation mechanisms that are developed during WP2. The strong relationship UNALM has with research organisations and the livestock sector stakeholders is a great asset to the EDULIVE project. UNALM is involved in a number of other work packages. In WP1, it is target of the stakeholder consultation on study programs, but also provides feedback to Argentinian universities. In WP3, it supports the preparation of university staff trainings. UNALM lecturers are target of WP4, but UNALM will also share their experiences on e-learning with the other Argentinian and Peruvian partner universities. In WP5 and WP7, UNALM will cooperate with the livestock sector partners in higher education. UNALM is involved in the evaluation of new mechanisms and activities implemented by the EDULIVE project (WP6 and WP8), sharing the experience of a target organisation.
