Aims and activities of the organisation

The university sees itself as a teaching and research institution focused on renewable resources that are a prerequisite for human existence. The relationships between man, society and the environment form the base of all activities at BOKU, and its foremost aim is to make decisive contributions to securing the well-being of future generations. In this endeavour, it will seek ways of ensuring a sustainable and environmentally sound management of natural resources by allying the competences of natural, engineering, economic and social sciences.

Founded in 1872, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna nowadays consists of 15 departments and four service centres in Vienna, as well as a number of experimental centres in surrounding areas. The university provides study courses at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate level with an average of 12,000 attending students. Approx. 1,800 staff members are engaged in teaching and research, together with a broad range of external lecturers; some 460 persons work in service and administration.

The role of the organisation in the project

BOKU is the coordinating institution of the EDULIVE project consortium and is Work Package leader for quality plan (WP9), dissemination (WP10) and project management (WP11). BOKU also figures as link between the EU desk officer and the EDULIVE consortium. As project manager, BOKU is in regular contact with all project partners, more specifically with the contact persons (CP) of each project partner. BOKU supports all work package leaders in issues that are relevant for the project as a whole. As WP leader, BOKU is also responsible for monitoring and evaluation of the overall project (WP9) as well as dissemination of project results, products and outputs (WP10). BOKU is involved in a range of other work packages of EDULIVE project as participating organization. In WP1, BOKU supports the development of the survey questionnaires. In WP2, BOKU supports the establishment of cooperation mechanisms with its experience in private sector cooperation. In WP3, BOKU prepares the lecturers’ trainings as one of the European host organizations. In WP4, BOKU teaches in Argentina and Peru and hosts lecturers during short stays in Austria. In WP6 and WP8, BOKU takes part in the process of evaluating the new mechanisms and activities implemented by the EDULIVE project, providing technical input and sharing experiences.
